Sunday, 12/25/2016: Christmas

My darling wife, Christine, wanted to stay home this year for Christmas. Which was good ... because I came down with a head cold that got worse during the day. I wanted to get out for a run but that didn't happen. No one came over and we didn't go out so we spent a quiet Christmas in our townhouse.

Christine made it her mission to feed my cold with food and then drown it with juices. I woke up about six times between going to sleep and waking up so I could go to the bathroom and/or blow my nose.

Monday, 12/26/2016: Sick day.

My head cold got worse. I blew my nose, sneezed and blew my nose some more ... joy. I did pass some time by watching YouTube on the smart TV in the master bedroom. I started with Star Wars commercials (YouTube link here), then made it to Darth Vader shorts (like Darth Vader in Love, YouTube link here and Darth Vader Gets Arrested, YouTube link here) and then some Star Wars fan films. The "Darth Maul: Apprentice" was truly great!

New alert! I went to bed at 7 PM and slept until 6 AM for a solid 11 hours of sleep. I felt like crap so I just decided to go to bed.

Tuesday, 12/27/2016: Another sick day

I did make it outside to take a Netflix DVD to the mailbox on Greenleaf Rd on Tuesday. It was a slow news day ... then the Bills owner fired the coach, Rex Ryan and his twin brother, Rob.

Later, I whined enough to convince my darling wife, Christine, to head out before I went to bed for ice cream and cold medicine. My throat was raw. A cold milk shake felt good before I tried to get any sleep that I could get before I went to work in the morning.

Wednesday, 12/28/2016 through Friday, 12/30/2016: Three more sick days

I made it to work and back on Wednesday and Thursday with a vacation day on Friday. I was slowly getting better. This cold didn't knock me off my feet but sure slowed me down. I haven't "given" it to Christine ... yet. But I may weaken and give it to her soon.

Saturday, 12/31/2016: 5.05 miles, 43:56, 8:42 pace, 30F, 64% RH, 9 mph S wind, wind chill 22F, partly cloudy.


I needed to get one more run in before the end of 2016. I wasn't 100% but I felt a bit better. I went out on the LOSP trail for 2.5 miles and back. I wore my blue Salamon SpeedCross 3 trail shoes just in case but there was only 1/2 to 2 inches of snow on parts of the trail. I struck up a really nice and easy pace. While I ran I just thought about the runs of 2016. My splits were: 8:44, 8:35, 8:44, 8:51 and 8:40.

Later, I managed to get close enough to my darling wife, Christine, to "give" her my cold. She'll say that she got it while she was taking care of me, lol! I'm sorry, honey!

Stats for the month of December: I ran 16 times for 107.71 miles, 6.43 miles per run. One was a warmup before Freezeroo #1 of 2 miles, another was a warmup before WTF of 1.1 miles and another was a snowshoe run of 2.15 miles.
I ran two races during December: Freezeroo #1 (5K) and the Winter Trail Festival (WTF) of 15.29 miles.
Stats for 2016: I ran 206 times for 1516.37 miles, 7.36 miles/run. I put on the snowshoes 5 times for 11.1 miles and biked 8 times for 128 miles.

Sunday, 12/18/2016 to Saturday, 12/24/2016

I ran 5 times this week, 31.55 miles.

Sunday, 12/18/2016: 7.4 miles, 1:01:03, 8:15 pace, 30F, 93% RH, 16 mph WNW wind, wind chill 19F, overcast.

I was still a bit apprehensive about the road conditions and I needed to run. What to do? So ... I geared up with the usual attire, brushed off the car and drove out to where I figured that there would be wide shoulders. Where? I knew Janes and Island Cottage roads would have wide and plowed shoulders.


I headed out west to start off right into the west wind ... which practically blew me backwards. I just put my head down and ran. It was a cold 1.5 mile run into the wind but a sweet run back and then I ran up and down Island Cottage before I headed back to the Cruze. I saw a couple of other runners that enjoyed the wide shoulders ... nice! My splits were: 8:57, 8:22, 7:53, 7:51, 8:18, 8:09, 8:10 and 8:15 over the last 0.4 mile. Then I hit up Wegmans for groceries ... which included 4, yes 4, donuts to split between my lovely wife, Christine, and I (myself?).

Later we watched the Brown - Bills game. I had thought about buying tickets to this game off of Stubhub.com but I was glad to watch it from the warmth of the couch. Christine was a bit conflicted being a Cleveland girl but the Bills kept the Browns winless on the season, 33-13, link here. The Bills kept their very slim playoff hopes alive at 7-7 with just a home game against Miami next weekend and a road game against the Jets the weekend after that.

Monday, 12/20/2016: Rest day ... nothing unusual.

Tuesday, 12/21/2016: 7.4 miles, 1:00:03, 8:06 pace, 34F, 40% RH, 14 mph SSW wind, wind chill 24F, partly cloudy.

I had all my running gear and I had thought about running around B601 again but I got to deal with a printer just before lunch and had to deal with that instead. So ... I was left with running after work. Where to run? My two choices were either run Cobb's Hill or run where I ran on Sunday which is close to home. My mind and body tried to rebel but my will won out. I dressed at work, drove out there and got it done.


It was just getting to be dark when I started. I started a bit slow and then really pushed it for a bit. My splits were: 8:40, 8:03, 7:53, 7:59, 8:01, 8:20, 8:04 and 7:29 over the last 0.4 mile.I like this route because it has wide shoulders. That doesn't mean that drivers always keep on the road though ... one car came by on Island Cottage a full foot past the fog line which startled me a bit.

Back to my new old usual. I left work a couple hours since it was my last wor day before Christmas. It was daylight. I thought I was going a bit slower than Tuesday but I ended up faster. My splits were: 8:29, 8:16, 7:57, 7:57, 7:52, 7:54, 7:49 and 7:29. So I almost pulled off a negative split run ... kind of sweet!

Friday, 12/23/2016: 2 miles on the treadmill

What to do with 5 days off? Well, I wanted to either run or work out on all 5 days. So today, I worked out. I warmed up with a treadmill mile at 8:00 pace, then a mile upper workout, another treadmill mile at 8:00 pace and then 10 minutes of elliptical.

Earlier I have braved the W Ridge Rd traffic to get to Greece Ridge Mall. I took me 10 minutes to get from the I-390S exit to the nearest entrance and then turn left. I picked up my new eyeglasses at Sterling Optical. They are progressive bifocals with progressive lenses that tint. It was quite easy to get used to them. I just tilt my head to bring close stuff into focus. I also have to remember to tilt my head down to bring far away things in focus. Then I braved grocery shopping at Wegmans on Latta with a list with tiny type that Christine had printed out. Wegmans was quite busy to say the least. I just took my time. I managed to get about most of what was on the list.

Saturday, 12/24/2016: 9.35 miles,


I set my alarm for 6:45 AM but it didn't go off and I woke up around 7:30 AM. I found that I had set my MTWTF alarm instead of my SatSun alarm. I forgot that today was Saturday. So ... I got out later than I expected. But I did get out. It was sprinkling and in the lower 40s so I overdressed a bit with a short sleeve tech under my Brooks 1/4 zip pullover, a balaclava and ski mittens. I struck up a really nice and easy pace but was forced to take three teeny walk breaks. I just felt sluggish. My splits were: 8:12, 8:19, 8:03, 8:18, 8:35, 7:53, 8:03, 8:07, 8:22 and 7:55 over the last 0.35 miles. I got a bit wet when the sprinkles became a light rain for a little while. Nothing a hot shower couldn't cure.

My darling wife, Christine, and I went down to Newark to see my oldest son, Michael, and daughter, Karen. We took them out to eat at our usual haunt, Parker's Grille. The food was excellent like usual. We caught up but some of their news was quite disconcerting. I will not elaborate on it.

We watched a bit of the Dolphins - Bills game that was played on Saturday instead of Sunday (due to Christmas). The Bills were down most of the game. When we left Parker's to take them home the Bills were down, 21-28. I had to go to Wegmans in the Newark Plaza so I turned on WCMF to listen the game. Well, the Bills were 24-28 with the ball late the 4th quarter. So I listened while sitting in the Cruze in the parking lot. The Bills scored to go ahead 31-28. Then the Bill's porous defense allowed the Dolphins to tie it up at 31-31 to force OT. The Bills had their chances but had a missed FG and then didn't go for it on 4th and 2 from the Dolphins 41 with 4 minutes to go. The Dolphins promptly drove down the field thanks to porous tackling and then kicked the game winning FG to win 34-41, link here. The Bills had 589 yards of total offense but allowed over 500 yards themselves. The Bills rushed for 272 yards and allowed the guy who rushed for 214 yards in Miami's first win against the Bills to rush for 206 yards again.

Sunday, 12/11/2016: Rest day.

Yes, it was a Sunday and I didn't run. I rationalized this by telling myself that I had run 15.29 trail miles the day before by running the TrailsROC WTF in Powder Mills Park. Yes, I was a bit sore but that didn't mean I wasn't a bit cranky or grouchy for not running on a Sunday. It was like I was a pent up cheetah wanting to run ... OK, maybe not a cheetah but at least an animal that wanted to run, lol!

I went out to Sterling Optical to finally look at and put a down payment on some much needed eyeglasses. I have some money in my FSA that needed to use up before the end of 2016 and most of it will go there. I think these glasses may be made of gold though!

I watched the Steelers - Bills games off the DVR. That was a good thing so I didn't have to wait for all the commercials as I watched the Bills defense allow Bell to run wild for 236 yards (118 yards in the third quarter alone) and also pick up 62 passing yards. The Bills had a chance but lost 20-27, link here. So .. the Bills will not be playoff bound yet again.

Monday, 12/12/2016: Rest day.

Just getting back into the Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday running schedule. A couple of inches of snow fell overnight so I left early for work and had an easy commute.

Tuesday, 12/13/2016: 6.55 miles, 1:00:05, 9:10 pace, 34F, 59% RH, 18 mph SW wind, wind chill 23F, overcast.


I have never run on the canal path in the winter so I didn't know what to expect. Well ... it wasn't pretty but I got it done. The sidewalk leading to the canal path was a kind of crusty snow and ice mix, the canal path itself had 1 to 3 inches of snow and the parking lot was bare. The parking lot itself is a 0.75 mile loop. I may end up running on that all winter. It's bare, has little traffic. it's a lot safer but it's a whole lot more boring ... but it's running on a bare surface, it's during the daylight and it's safer. Anyway ... my splits were: 27. 36, 03, 21, 53, 8:12 and 8:17 over the last 0.55 mile.

Wednesday, 12/14/2016: Rest day ... nothing unusual.

Thursday, 12/15/2016: Rest day ... bitter cold and windy.

I brought all my cold weather gear and then some to work. The snow and wind came just as the morning commute started so the plows didn't get a chance to get ahead of it. The temperature was 15F and the winds were 15-30 mph. So ... the morning commute sucked. It took me 45 minutes to go 10 miles. I ended up going down the 1 mile onramp to W Ridge Rd and then taking Latona and Lee Rd to B601. I got to work 12 minutes late and took it out of my 1 hour lunch. I thought about going for a run around the B601 parking lot but ... I thought better of it. I could have though ... the weather cleared around 12:30 PM for a while. I drove from B101 back to B601 and had no trouble. The snow came again during the evening commute ... lovely. I missed my exit off the LOSP for Greenleaf Rd and had to turn around at Lake Ave to go at it from the other direction. I knew the exit was there on the first try but I couldn't see any track into it. I didn't want to make my own and possibly go off the road so I erred on the side of caution ... luckily there was no one behind me.

Friday, 12/16/2016: 6.55 miles, 55:04, 8:24 pace, 19F, 67% RH, 17 mph WSW wind, wind chill 5F, mostly cloudy.


The weather turned "almost" balmy ... 20F and mild winds. I braved it with my CW-X tights, shorts, long sleeve tech, yellow Brook 1/4 zip pullover, balaclava, yellow Brooks beanie, ski mittens and sunglasses. The only surface exposed was around my mouth. I just ran around the B601 parking lot ... a total of 8 times. I warmed up somewhat and only slipped for an instant once. I took a turn a bit too sharp. My splits were: 8:41, 8:35, 8:33, 8:24, 8:17, 8:13 and 7:54 over the last 0.55 mile. I am sure that everyone that I met running thought I was crazy (probably non-runners).

Saturday, 12/17/2016: 2.15 miles, 33:17, 15:28 pace, 21F, 86% RH, 5 mph S wind, wind chill 14F, overcast.

This morning I saw posts about people getting ready for the Reindeer Run and about running Around the Bay. About three of snow had fallen overnight. I hadn't committed to either one so I was in a quandary. I didn't trust the roads so I thought ... snowshoes! I found them and my ski mittens, dressed with an extra layer and got out there.


I just did a really easy and nice snowshoe run in the Lakeshore Country Club which is just across the railroad tracks from our townhouse. We overlook the sixth green. Today there weren't any golfers. I only saw one lonely cross country trail. My splits were: 15:29, 15:26 and 15:04 over the last 0.15 mile. I was a bit chilled so a couple of mugs of coffee hit the spot afterward.

I learned later that the conditions for the Reindeer Run were quite icy. I could see that in the times that I saw posted on Yellow Jacket Racing link here. The times were about three to four minutes slower than normal. There were only 4 people at the Round the Bay run and the Pointless Hills bike ride afterward was cancelled.

Meanwhile ... an interesting article in Runner's World about the Surf-N-Santa 5 Mile Race down in Virginia Beach, link here. It seemed that J&A Racing went after the record for the Guiness World Record for the Largest Santa Claus Run. There was a required video of the start and finish and four official counters at the finish line that counted 5,024 official finishers that finished with the required 5 pieces: a red pants, red jacket, red hat, black belt and white beard. 191 Santas didn't make the cut since there were 5,224 finishers, link here. They beat the old record of 4,961 set back in 2013 at the Dundalk Charity Santa Fun Run in Ireland

So ... this week was a light running week plus I have shut down my 2016 racing schedule. I ran 37 races this year which is a far cry from the 58 races I ran in 2015. Why? Well ... I decided to keep an unofficial racing budget this year for one. The good thing is that my running mileage for 2016 is in record territory. I guess I ran long more often than not when I didn't have a race during those "free" weekends.

Sunday, 12/4/2016 to Saturday, 12/10/2016 - WTF

Sunday, 12/4/2016: 13.25 miles, 1:50:22, 8:20 pace, 30F, 93% RH, calm, sunny



I toyed with the idea of running either my Greenleaf Half or 20 route. Yes, it was cold but it was Sunday and I try to run long on Sunday. So ... I got dressed for the weather with my usual Brook CW-X tights, yellow Brooks 1/4 zip pullover, yellow Brooks beanie and heavy gloves. Yes, I do tend to wear the same clothing for my winter runs. Anyway ... I had my 20 ounce water bottle and my Hammer Gel in case I needed water or nutrition. I struck up a nice and easy pace .. then kept it up. I knew I had the 3 loops of the WTF next weekend so I settled on running the Greenleaf Half. It was a bit cold so I just hydrated at 6, 8, 10 (a few more gulps of water) and 12 miles. My splits were: 8:29, 8:26, 8:19, 8:17, 8:17, 8:08, 8:20, 8:18, 8:28, 8:07, 8:30, 8:19, 8:25 and 7:36 over the last 0.25 mile. Boom ... done. I hydrated with the usual mugs of coffee and had a bagel for fuel.

Later ... my darling wife, Christine, gave me a haircut. She had some difficultly. She mentioned that "I had hair of steel". My new haircut is a buzz cut with just 1/4" of hair remaining. It took her a while. A shower afterward helped show all the hair that she missed so she could get 99.9% of the rest. Then I took her out to the Distillery so we could have our fourth wedding anniversary dinner thanks to a coupon that she had received from them.

We watched a lot of the second half of the Bills - Raiders game while we ate ... and were disappointed. The Bills led at halftime 10-9. They were up 24-9 with 9:01 in the third quarter ... and then collasped. They were outscored 29-0 the rest of the game to lose 24-38, link here.

Tuesday, 12/6/2016: 7.05 miles, 56:25, 8:00 pace, 39F, 75% RH, 9 mph ESE wind, wind chill 33F, mostly cloudy.


Today I got ALL my running gear (including my running shoes) to work so I could go out for a run before lunch. The wind was a bit brisk out of the east so I had to run a bit hard to warm up and stay warm. My splits were: 8:15, 7:55, 7:54, 8:03, 8;00, 8:03 and 7:55. Not a bad run. It's a lot better to run in the daylight. The only bad part is crossing Lexington Ave twice.

Wednesday, 12/7/2016: Rest day.

Thursday, 12/8/2016: 7 miles, 58:05, 8:17 pace, 36F, 51% RH, 12 mph W wind, wind chill 27F, partly cloudy


I had the day off so I took the Equinox to Brother's Collision to get its right front tire fixed. I was told that it had a nail in it. I must have a magnet or something in this car because I just had a screw in the right rear not even a month ago. That visit was also for an oil change and tire rotation. Anyway ... they charged a hour of labor plus the plug so the damage was $60. I tried to give the local "little guy" some business and ended up getting screwed. Who knows whether going to Bob Johnson Chevrolet for all of this over the past month would have been cheaper or not?

I went out for a nice and easy run instead of waiting around for the tire to be fixed. I had to take to the grass (there was no shoulder) twice on this run on the same stretch of road. Once was on the curvy downhill on Van Voorhis Ave when a car came around a blind corner. The other was on Seneca Park Ave when two cars in opposite directions passed me at the same time. The wind really bit into me so I was glad that I had put on my newly acquired GRTC muffler around my neck. My nice and easy splits were: 8:33, 8:19, 8:35, 8:07, 7:48, 8:21 and 8:20.

Saturday, 12/10/2016: WTF (no ... Winter Trail Festival

Today's race was produced by TrailsROC and officially called 0 Degree WTF. It was also FREE to help celebrate the 4th anniversary of TrailsROC. It was held down in Powder Mills Park. This was my third year (2014 in 3:37:00 and 2015 in 3:21:21) so I knew that it was a 5 mile loop course that you could run once, twice or three times. Andy Ciaio said it best before the race: "Why run just 5 miles when there is a 15 mile option?" This course is interesting because of its hills. There is a ski hill at mile 3 to run ... err, walk up. There is steeper hill at mile 4 that has a rope that you can use to help pull yourself up.

The race started at three different times. The 15 mile started at 10 AM, the 10 mile started at 10:30 AM and the 5 mile started at 11 AM. I was slated for the 15 mile. "Go big or go home" I had replied to Andy before the race. Prem was also running the 15 mile race. I was in my usual racing garb: my old CW-X tights, yellow Brooks 1/4 zip pullover, yellow Brooks beanie and heavy running gloves. It was a bit cold and windy so I added a blue short sleeve TrailsROC tech shirt underneath and my new GRTC blue neck fleece. I also had my 20 ounce water bottle and 5 ounce Hammer Gel flask filled with Apple Cinnamon Hammer Gel.

I got out for a 1.1 mile warm up run before the race at 10.49 pace, link here. I got done with just 5 minutes to spare so I quickly got a gulp of water from the Cruze. My fingers were cold and I tried to change to my ski mittens but couldn't hold my water bottle with them on so I changed back to my heavy running gloves and hurried up to the start with a minute to spare. The weather was: 25F, 86% RH, 6 mph WSW wind, wind chill 18F, mostly cloudy with patches of sun or light snow. The trails conditions were pretty good with just a bit of snow but lots of unfrozen leaves. I wore my blue Salamon Speedcross 3 trail shoes.

The start was a bit farther back this year to allow for some thinning out before we hit single track. And ... we were off! I settled into a slow trail pace and settled in. Each loop had its story.


Loop 1 was a bit quick at 57 minutes. Ups, flats and downs. There was a brief marshy area just before the ski hill. Heather Ostrander (HBO) and her husband were heckling ... err, encouraging at the top of the ski hill. I caught up to Andy for a brief second at the bottom of the "rope" hill at mile 4. I could see the 5 mile runners getting ready as I came through the start/finish line. I had as much Hammer Gel as I could squeeze out of my flask before I started Loop 2 ... it was a bit cold and didn't flow too well for some reason.

Loop 2 was a bit slower at 65 minutes. Prem caught up to me midway during this loop. I ran with him for a couple hundred yards and then he went ahead. I was warm for a bit and pusjed my sleeves up for a couple of miles. I got my feet kind of wet walking through the marshy area. HBO and hubby were still encouraging me up the ski hill. I asked someone if I could quit ... but no one said yes. I took the top off of my flask and gulped a few good mouthfuls of Hammer Gel before I started Loop 3.

Loop 3 was slower at 72 minutes. I walked more. My right fingers were cold so I tried to warm them by pulling my fingertips out of the mitten and balling them up. Then ... I couldn't get my index finger fully back into the mitten. I got my feet kind of wet again in the marshy area. HBO told me that I had not looked very good each time up the hill and asked if I wanted to climb it again. I told her "No". I followed a group of three runners down from the ski hill. They were running so I did too. The rope hill was coming up so I jammed my fingertips back in the mitten as best as I could. The rope hill was just as steep as ever. I didn't use the rope like all the other times and just climbed up as best as I could by grabbing roots and pulling myself up. Only a mile to go. I willed myself to walk the ups and then run the flats and downs. Up the last hill ... down, down ... run the flats to the finish ... done with 15.29 miles in 3:12:30 at 12:36 pace according to my Garmin.

I ambled into the lodge. There was no much that I liked to eat. I am not a soup or broth person so I settled for 6 cookies. I revived myself long enough to get out to the Cruze so I could change into some dry clothes, put my parka, eat an energy bar and down some coffee that I had brought in my running bag. I headed home where I went straight (OK, I stripped first) into a hot shower and bath to warm my fingertips and toes. I had my usual mugs of coffee and a bagel while I caught up on Facebook. I did have the usual aches and pain also. I am a creature of habit and so is my body post race.

Oh ... officially, I ran a 3:12:13, I was 33rd out of 50 and was 6th out of 10 in my M 50-59 age group, link here. So I ran a course PR. Today's conditions were a lot better than the six inches of snow in 2014 but worse than 2015's 43F. I had left knee and right heel pain last year so I walked in from mile 12. So I guess I did run pretty well this year. There were 73 finishers in the 10 mile race, link here. There were 59 finishers in the 5 mile race, link here. One of the 5 mile race finishers was 83 year old, Charlie Sabatine. Charlie is a Rochester running legend and all around nice guy. He ran 100 milers before they were cool, ran Boston before I knew what Boston meant, probably made a lot of the trails in Mendon Ponds Park, runs his own race called Charlie's Old Goat Run and was inducted into the GRTC Hall of Fame in 2006, link here.

There were several people who ran the WTF 5 mile race who were also running It's A Wonderful Run 5K out in Seneca Falls at 4:40 PM. A "twofer", awesome!

Sunday, 11/27/2016: 6.25 miles, 50:20, 8:03 pace, 36F, 100% RH, calm, overcast


I decided to give my old Brooks Adrenaline GTS15 running shoes with 650 miles on them a ride. I could definitely feel the difference. I tried to take it nice and easy but I think I ran faster just to get them off my feet. My splits were: 8:15, 8:01, 8:07, 8:09, 7:55, 7:59 and 7:27 over the last 0.25 miles.

Tuesday, 11/29/2016: 7.05 miles, 56:15, 7:58 pace, 55F, 72% RH, 14 mph S wind, overcast.


It was forecast to get up to 60F during late November so I got out for a before lunch run. I could have used my light running gloves but made due. I got up to speed quickly and pushed it once I did. My splits were: 8:18, 8:02, 7:54, 7:57, 7:59, 7:58 and 7:46. Boom!

Wednesday, 11/30/2016: Rest day.

Running stats for November and so far in 2016:

I brought all my running gear to work this morning ... except my running shoes! Oops! What to do? Well ... go run when I got home, of course! So I got ready, grabbed my headlamp and go out there. My splits were: 8:09, 8:04, 7:58, 8:15, 7:56, 7:52 and 8:13.

Saturday, 12/3/2016: Freezeroo #1

Today's race with Freezeroo #1, the first race of the 2016-2017 Greater Rochester Track Club Freezeroo 6 race series. Today's venue was Northstar Christian Academy. The course was a familiar one that I have run numerous times between running 2 Freezeroo #1s and 2 NCA 5Ks. It's a twisty out and back.

I got up around 6AM, puttered around a while, had my usual pre-race bowl of cereal and banana, gave Christine a chance to come along (which she declined), kissed her goodbye and headed out. I had on my usual running gear for running with temperatures around freezing: my old CW-X tights, Darn Tough crew socks, yellow Brooks 1/4 zip pullover, yellow Brooks beanie and heavy running gloves. I brought along my yellow Brooks jacket for pre-race warm up warmth.

I got to the race venue around 8:45 AM ... a bit earlier than usual. I got my bib and the GRTC series gift of a GRTC neck fleece. I met up with Andy Ciaio and Prem Kumar. We talked about running ... like usual. I got out for a longer than usual pre-race run of 2 miles at 8:47 pace, link here. It was a bit windy so I put my GRTC series gift to good use. The weather was: 37F, 87% RH, 8 mph NW wind, wind chill 31F, overcast.


I lined up for the race in my usual spot: a bit close to the start line and off to the right. And ... we were off!

I got up to speed quickly. I stayed with Andy and Prem for about 1/4 mile. I was behind Wilt Alston for a bit before I felt boxed in and broke ahead of him around mile 1/2. Pete called out 7:08 at mile 1. I made the turn around and headed back. Some runners who knew me called out encouragement ... which is the nice thing about out and backs.

I passed a few runners on the way back. I ran around the last building and tried to put it into a sprint ... time just above 22 ... a bit disappointed ... done with 3.12 miles in 22:09, 7:05 pace, according to my Garmin. Andy had caught Prem in the last 0.05 mile and finished in 20:57 with Prem two seconds behind. Nice!

I went inside for some post race grub ... a donut, a half raisin sandwich with peanut butter (yum!) and chocolate milk. GRTC was selling old merchandise at 3 for $10 so I picked up a laundry bag, GRTC socks and GRTC gloves ... nice!

The weather for previous Don Curran Memorial 5Ks
I found a poster board that showed the weather for previous Don Curran Memorial 5Ks. It has been held since 2005. It was held as Freezeroo #3 at Camp Eastman from 2005 until 2012 and then moved to Freezeroo #1 at Northstar Christian Academy. I ran the Camp Eastman course in 2007 and 2011 so I remember those two races. The course was a bit greasy in 2011.

My official results were 22:06, 30th out of 146, link here. I was 5th out of 20 in my M 55-59 age group, link here. My splits were: 6:58, 7:12, 7:13 and 6:12 over the last 0.12 mile.

Soon ... I was home in my recliner with my feet up drinking a couple mugs of coffee, eating a bagel and catching up on Facebook. Ahhh!
